Frequently Asked Questions
We have created this section to all homeowners in St. Louis that have many of the same questions.
Read below to find the answers to some of the frequently asked questions.
What Is That Black Stuff Growing On Your Roof?
Those ugly black stains on your roof that are getting larger with time are the result of a cyanobacteria called Gloeocapsa Magma. If left untreated, it will eventually take over your roof. As algae spreads, it eats away at the limestone filler. Algae when left untreated can reduce the life of your shingles by 30%.
Do I need to be home during the cleaning?
No, all that we ask is that your animals are left inside and all of the windows are shut. A detailed invoice will be sent the day before giving us permission to work on your roof.
Can I get rid of the black streaks on my roof with store bought products?
We do not recommend trying to remove the black streaks on your roof using these products. If you read these products’ labels, they often reveal:
- The product uses a strong chemical degreaser that can harm or break down your asphalt roof.
- Most of these product takes multiple applications over a few months or even years.
- After you apply the product these companies recommend you spray it off with a power washer which is against what the shingle manufacturer recommends.

What will happen if I leave algae on my roof?
Leaving algae on your roof is a lot worse than just having to look at a dirty roof. Algae, moss, and lichen will start to decay your roof by holding moisture. Think about a wet sponge on your wood table. After time the water will cause damage as it seeps into the wood. In your case, watr is seeping into your roof. Once the liner on your roof is exposed and decaying, leaks will sprout and you will have no choice but to spend thousands of dollars to replace it.
By cleaning your roof every few years, you can extend the life of your roof by up to 30%
How do I know if my roof needs cleaning?
This is pretty easy to tell but it can be a little harder depending on how bad your roof is. Usually there are dark black streaks on the north facing side of your roof. However, once the algae has taken over your whole roof it can be hard to tell because the colors blend in and your whole roof will just be darker. It’s never too late to remove algae so contact us today.
Can roof cleaning save me money?
Yes, algae and fungus grow on your roof and eat the limestone, so it shortens the life of your shingle roof. Insurance companies are cancelling insurance policies if they get too bad (link to video). The algae also turns your roof black making it less reflective. It retains heat, and your energy bill will go up! Last but not least, it improves the curb appeal of your house. By cleaning the exterior of your house before you sell, it will earn you top dollar on your sale!

What is the best way to clean dirty concrete?
Concrete is very porous and and literally soaks up dirt and algae. Once dirt and algae have settled into the pores, water alone won’t get it out. That’s what makes cleaning a concrete driveway or cleaning a concrete patio very difficult.
The best way to clean concrete is to kill the algae and remove the dirt with a solution first. Using a professional grade cleaner instead of a power washer wand prevents streaking and gives a clean, uniform result.
